Information
The trail can be very busy on weekends. It is the most crowded on the North Side, near the Oak Street Beach area. Further north, closer to Lincoln Park and Diversey Harbor, the trail can be hazardous because people walking to and from the beach tend to walk straight across the trail without realizing they need to look both ways before crossing. Runners have a hard time, but cyclists have it even worse!

If you’re going southbound, just south of the Museum Campus, runners have to share the trail with boat docks during the summer. These aren’t shipping or commercial boats. All of the boats in these docks are just recreational use vessels, which means runners sometimes have to navigate large crowds of party goers trying to get in and out of their dock space. As soon as the weather turns a bit chilly in early autumn, they all disappear.

Another great thing about the Lakefront Trail is that there are separate areas for runners and cyclists. These extra lanes were new additions in the last few years. Before they were built, there were plenty of accidents and close calls from cyclists not sharing the trail well with runners.

There are bathroom facilities all along the trail, but they are only open from May through October. Once winter hits, all park district facilities are closed. The trail is still maintained in the winter – snow removal on the trail happens faster than it does on some of the Chicago city streets!
